As the global ecological landscape continues to shift, climate change has become an inescapable reality. According to the China Climate Change Blue Book (2024), the global warming trend shows no signs of slowing. In 2023, China’s annual average surface temperature was 0.84°C above the historical norm. Meanwhile, extreme weather events are growing both more frequent and more intense, posing mounting challenges to human life and public health.
At the same time, China is facing the accelerating pressures of population ageing. The country is now home to an estimated 15 million people living with dementia—including 10 million with Alzheimer’s disease—among its population aged 60 and above. Dementia deeply affects patients’ quality of life, imposes heavy burdens on families, and strains national healthcare systems.
Could there be a hidden link between these two seemingly unrelated challenges—climate change and dementia?
In a groundbreaking study, Dr Xi Chen, Associate Professor of Public Health of Yale University, finds compelling evidence that rising temperatures are having a measurable impact on dementia-related hospital admissions and mortality in China. His research brings to light an urgent yet often overlooked intersection of environmental and neurological health.
To share these findings with a wider audience, the ECHORA Annual Lecture Series is honoured to host Dr Chen for a special keynote titled: The Impact of Climate Change on Dementia-related Hospitalizations and Mortality in China.
