As part of our continued commitment to fostering international dialogue on health policy and market access, ECHORA was honoured to host Professor Jing Wu, Director of the Pharmacoeconomics Section of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association and Professor at Tianjin University, for a keynote lecture on 13 March 2025.

In this online session, delivered as part of the ECHORA Annual Lecture Series, Prof Wu provided a comprehensive overview of the evolving frameworks for the economic evaluation and reimbursement of innovative medicines in China.

Against the backdrop of a rapidly ageing population and the increasing burden of chronic disease, China’s healthcare system is undergoing a profound transformation. The country has built the world’s largest basic medical insurance network, and is now shifting toward a model that emphasises health outcomes, strong primary care, and value-based care delivery. In this context, Prof Wu addressed some of the most pressing questions facing policymakers and market actors today:

  • How can access to innovative therapies be expanded without jeopardising system sustainability?
  • What mechanisms can balance cost control with incentives for pharmaceutical innovation?

She shared in-depth reflections on recent policy developments, the growing role of pharmacoeconomic evidence in pricing negotiations, and the ongoing revision of China’s national pharmacoeconomics guidelines. Prof Wu also highlighted the increasing public demand for access to treatments for cancer, rare diseases, and chronic conditions—pointing to a future where scientific innovation must be paired with affordability and fairness in policy design.

Her talk attracted a wide audience of researchers, regulators, industry professionals, and students, and sparked rich discussion around international approaches to value assessment, market entry, and the ethical considerations of resource allocation.

We thank Prof Wu for generously sharing her expertise and for contributing to a much-needed global conversation on equitable and evidence-informed access to healthcare.
